In a tale where fortunes dance like the cards in a high-stakes poker game, the latest “Philippines’ 50 Richest” list from Forbes Asia reveals a fascinating shift in the economic hierarchy. Taking the crown in this glittering arena are the heirs to a formidable gambling and business empire – the Sy siblings. These prodigies have inherited their immense wealth from the legendary Henry Sy Sr., a titan of the early gambling and casino industry in the Philippines. Sy Sr., who shuffled off this mortal coil at 94 in 2019, laid the diamonds and spades for this robust fortune.

Philippines’ Richest People in 2024 Are Gambling Moguls

Henry Sy Sr. was not just a player but a master of the game, building SM Investments Corporation, a sprawling conglomerate that stands as a financial monolith. It’s the mastermind behind City of Dreams Manila, the crown jewel of the nation’s casino resorts, nestled in the bustling heart of Manila. The City of Dreams, operated by Melco through Melco Leisure – a company headquartered in the glamorous quarters of Hong Kong – is a testament to Sy Sr.’s impeccable business instincts.

The Sy siblings, like seasoned poker players, are not content resting on their laurels. They plan to ante up in the local gambling industry, seizing opportunities as the landscape shifts. With the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs) taking a hit under President Bongbong Marcos and online gambling facing increasing restrictions, the stage is set for a rise in physical gambling havens. This could usher in a new era of prosperity, leveraging zones like the Clark Freeport Zone to develop more land-based casino resorts. Notably, a pivot away from online gambling could also mend fences with China, the country’s largest trade partner, with whom territorial waters have been a hotly contested poker table.

The Clash of Titans: The Main Players in the Game

Sitting in the runner-up position on the Philippines’ list of wealthiest is the indomitable Enrique Razon Jr. This port-ly hero is the brain behind International Container Terminal Services, the nation’s largest port operator. But Razon isn’t just stacking shipping containers; he’s also building a gambling empire. His Bloomberry Resorts, another heavyweight contender in the local landscape, is the powerhouse behind Solaire in Entertainment City.

Solaire and City of Dreams are like rival boxers in the ring, slugging it out in a costly land-based market, each aiming to deliver a knockout punch. With external investors setting their sights on greener pastures in South Korea and Japan, and even Thailand gearing up to roll the dice with its own land-based casino resorts, the local heavyweights remain largely undeterred. The fortunes of the Sy siblings and Razon remain insulated from these international moves, like kings holding court in their domains.

Further Gambling Expansion on the Horizon

Though the competition may be regional, the Sy siblings and Razon have their chips spread across the table, not just in gambling but in diverse industries. The Sy fortune, however, is feeling the squeeze, contracting from $14.4 billion to $13 billion. Meanwhile, Razon’s fortune has been on an upward trajectory, now standing at a hefty $11.1 billion. But this high roller isn’t just sitting on his stack; his company, Bloomberry Resorts, holds a stake in the Jeju Sun Hotel & Casino, which could be a card he’s willing to trade in the future.

These titans of industry are playing a long game, their fortunes rising and falling like the bets at a craps table. With the local market insulated from broader regional tremors but ever watchful of the increasing premium experiences in Thailand and Japan, they remain in a position of strength, backed by their expansive portfolios.

The tale of the Sy siblings and Enrique Razon Jr. is one of audacious gambits, strategic bluffs, and high-stakes moves – a narrative that continues to unfold in the vibrant, unpredictable, and endlessly fascinating arena of the Philippines’ gambling industry.
