As various states across America continue to roll the dice in the battle for smoke-free casinos, the Norfolk casino project developers have decided to hedge their bets somewhat differently. The developers have revealed plans to integrate dedicated smoking areas within their property. In a move to mitigate health risks, Boyd Gaming assured patrons that they’ll be bringing in top-notch ventilation systems to keep the air as crisp as a freshly dealt hand.
The Casino Is in Development
This ambitious Norfolk casino project is the brainchild of none other than the Pamunkey Indian Tribe. This venture marks the tribal organization’s latest foray into the high-stakes world of casino development. Determined to build a property that stands out like a royal flush, the Pamunkey have enlisted the expertise of Boyd Gaming to ensure every aspect of the casino is a winning hand.
The project moved out of the realm of a long-shot dream and into reality when Virginia legalized casinos in five cities, including Norfolk, back in 2020. Shortly after, the Pamunkey Tribe inked a deal with the government, giving them the green light to establish a casino in the coveted Hampton Roads area.
Unlike their traditional establishments, the Norfolk venture will operate as a commercial casino. A standout feature will include a shuttle service, making it as easy as an ace up your sleeve for guests to get in on the action.
An Enjoyable Environment for Everyone
As mentioned, the Norfolk casino is set to include designated smoking areas. Though Virginia’s 2009 Clean Air Act exempts casinos and racetracks from the smoking ban, theoretically allowing patrons to light up anywhere, the Norfolk casino plans to confine smoking to specific zones.
Boyd Gaming’s executive vice president, Uri Clinton, affirmed, “We aim to create an enjoyable environment for everyone, both smokers and nonsmokers.” He emphasized that modern technology would be the ace in their pocket ensuring this balance.
Advanced ventilation systems will act as the pit bosses, making sure smoke stays in its designated areas and doesn’t stray into nonsmoking zones.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however, remains unconvinced. Their stance is clear – the only surefire way to protect casino workers and guests is to completely ban smoking.
NJ Continues Fight for Smoke-Free Casinos
The CDC’s comment highlights an ongoing tug-of-war over indoor smoking in the US casino sector. In Atlantic City, casino workers have shown their hand, vocally protesting the secondhand smoke that jeopardizes their health.
Casino companies have been reluctant to completely nix smoking, fearing it might bust their profitability. Critics argue, however, that smoke-free casinos across the country continue to draw a full house, proving that gamblers remain loyal even without a smoky haze.
Adding to the push, New Jersey Republicans recently upped the ante, promoting bipartisan support for a legislative measure that aims to ban smoking in the state’s casino properties entirely.
In the end, the debate over smoke-free gambling realms rages on like a high-stakes poker game. The Norfolk casino project strides in with its own hand, dedicated to ensuring the dealer deals an enjoyable environment for both smokers and nonsmokers alike.
