Years after their initial gamble fell short, the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe is doubling down with renewed plans to build a casino in Inyokern, California. Positioned strategically at the crossroads of Highway 178 and near Highway 395, this project might very well be their ace in the hole.
According to the latest update from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Tribe has hit the jackpot. The Assistant Secretary—Indian Affairs has officially greenlit the acquisition of 20 acres of land—lovingly referred to as the County Land Parcel in Kern County—for “gaming and other purposes.”
The formal declaration reads: “The Assistant Secretary—Indian Affairs made a final agency determination to acquire in trust 20.03 acres, more or less, of land known as the County Land Parcel in Kern County, California, for the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe for gaming and other purposes.”
This pivotal decision marks a major milestone, setting the stage for the Tribe’s casino development in Inyokern. Much like a well-played hand, the project promises to bolster the Tribe’s fortunes. It’s anticipated that this casino will be a powerhouse of economic benefits, ushering in a wave of new jobs and fueling local businesses.
The Casino as an Ace Up the Sleeve: Boosting Tribe and Region
George Gholson, the Tribal Chairman, couldn’t hide his enthusiasm when he spoke about the project with CocoaDocs. He emphasized that the new casino in Inyokern is expected to be a linchpin for the Tribe’s growth.
In his own words: “This casino will provide a much-needed boost to our economy and will help us preserve and honor our cultural heritage.” Essentially, this development is foreseen to be a royal flush—not just for the Tribe, but for the entire region’s economic landscape.
This is indeed a comeback story, following the unsuccessful attempt to establish a casino in Ridgecrest. The Tribe’s endeavor to break into the Ridgecrest market dates back to 2018 and 2019. However, the odds were not in their favor, as they faced significant opposition that, compounded with COVID-19-related shutdowns, led to substantial delays.
Eventually, the Ridgecrest project crapped out early in 2022 when the Tribe couldn’t secure the land purchase within the required timeframe. It was a punch to the gut for sure, but like true high-stakes players, the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe is back at the table, ready to roll the dice again with their Inyokern casino project.
Rolling the Dice: An Anticipated Economic Windfall
All eyes are now on the potential economic upswing this casino can deliver. The project is a beacon of hope, aiming to create a multitude of jobs and stimulate local commerce. For the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe, it signifies much more than financial gain; it is about preserving their cultural heritage while securing their future.
As George Gholson aptly put it, this venture is not just a roll of the dice but a strategic move to ensure that the Tribe can flourish both economically and culturally. Here’s to hoping that, this time, their cards align perfectly, bringing home the winnings they so richly deserve.
