Global providers of sports betting and gambling platforms observe stringent regulations regarding data protection. Surveillance over upper-level employees’ access to crucial data is routine, with preservation of intellectual property rights constituting a key aspect for designers operating within the gaming industry.
Recent reports indicate that a legal proceeding has been initiated against an Aristocrat employee suspected of illegally downloading over 6,800 data files from the company’s databases. The Associated Press reports that leading game designer Dinh Toan Tran of Aristocrat is facing legal heat after the preeminent game-developing company filed a lawsuit over the alleged act of mass downloading of essential files.
The supposed infraction was traced back to last December, the gaming giant in its lawsuit, alleges Tran of having illegally downloading over 6,800 files and seeks through this legal action, the retrieval of these files.
In a court session conducted the previous week, the company succeeded in obtaining a search warrant from the Federal Court. Subsequently, a property considered to be Tran’s living quarters was thoroughly searched and there was a confiscation of electronic gadgets like tablets, laptops and external storage devices.
The Court demanded from Tran, the required details for logging in and simultaneously requested disclosure of his current location. Additionally, Tran was expressly instructed not to erase or discard any documents, files or other intellectual property that could potentially belong to the company. Specialists are currently studying the examined data from the confiscated electronic devices, recovered from a property positioned in western Sydney.
Continual Analysis of Data from the Confiscated Devices
Defence attorney for the involved employee, Ken Brotherson, confirmed that his client was absent during the execution of the search warrants.
Federal Court Justice Yaseen Shariff clarified that Aristocrat is entitled to establish the veracity of its suspicions regarding the downloaded files, remarking: “Everything thus far appears to have been handled with utmost professionalism.”
Currently, it is still uncertain whether Tran indeed unlawfully obtained any files from the company. The specific nature of these files remains elusive. However, on Thursday, Aristocrat’s barrister, John Hennessy SC informed the court that a particular USB storage device is at the point of the ongoing investigation. Examination and analysis of the data recovered during the raids are still in progress.
This lawsuit follows the December announcement by Aristocrat on their newest 3rd NFL-themed game, Overtime Cash, a development that reinforces the company’s prosperous collaboration with the NFL and subsequently broadens games’ portfolio for sports enthusiasts.
