Massachusetts’ Gaming Commission (MGC) is preparing to bid adieu to Executive Director Karen Wells on July 14, marking the culmination of her tenure at the helm. Wells publicly confirmed her decision to relinquish her current role, ending a remarkable, tumultuous decade holding the reins.

A Mutual Farewell

Indications suggest that Wells’ departure was rather pleasant, as evidenced by the mutual respect and commendation showered upon each other by Wells and the Commission’s Chair, Cathy Judd-Stein, as outlined in the official reports revealing this development.

Wells, who secured a unanimous approval to ascend the MGC’s executive director role from all five commissioners on September 10, 2020, was lauded as an “exemplar of leadership” by Judd-Stein.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of her team, the Chair commented on Wells’ significant contributions to MGC over the course of her decade-long involvement with the Commission, and saluted her exceptional leadership as the Executive Director. Judd-Stein further credited the organization’s efficiency to Wells’ diligent efforts and her capacity to guide and inspire the MGC squad.

As the commission prepares to unveil a selection process to appoint their next executive director at a sequence of forthcoming public gatherings, its Chair acknowledged Wells’ strategic acumen and composed demeanor.

Judd-Stein highlights Wells’ attributes as instrumental in establishing a sports betting ecosystem highly invested in consumer safeguarding. Earlier this month, MGC evaluated whether a Barstool promotional campaign contravened existing state rules.

Wells Expresses Endless Gratitude

Seizing the statement’s platform, Wells reflected on her decade-long tenure at the MGC, first as the Director of the Investigations and Enforcement Bureau, the organization’s largest division, and subsequently as the Executive Director for the past three years.

With an assurance of the organization’s smooth functioning, Wells conveyed her faith in the MGC’s continued success. She expressed an everlasting gratitude towards the support rendered by her fellow commissioners, teammates, and license holders.

Earlier this year, in anticipation of market launch, the MGC gave a nod to expanding the sports betting catalogue, granting punters an increased range of events to place bets on.
