A crackdown operation was performed by the Thai law enforcement on the residence of a high-ranking police officer, due to alleged connections with a prohibited gambling network, referred to as “Betflix.” Named as such in reference to the global streaming colossus Netflix, Betflix’s operations are in clear contravention of Thailand’s laws pertaining to gambling.
Lately, Thai law enforcement authorities have been intensifying efforts to clamp down unsanctioned gambling schemes. Consequently, approximately 30 locations spread across six provinces within Thailand have recently been targeted in police raids.
Among the targeted sites was the residence of deputy national police chief Surachate Hakparn, located in central Bangkok. A Swat team undertook the raid, searching for proof of Surachate’s possible associations with Betflix.
Surachate, well-recognized due to his frequent media appearances, showed no alarm amidst the ongoing investigation. He denied any involvement in the illicit gambling operation, promising full cooperation and avowing to answer any interrogations.
Undeterred by the investigation, Surachate pledged full cooperation and emphasized his lack of concern, stemming from his confident declaration of innocence.
Multiple Arrests Were Made
Betflix is an unauthorized offshore gambling site, primarily targeting Thai patrons. With most forms of gambling being deemed illegal in Thailand, the site poses a significant nuisance to the local environment. Operating under 12 subsidiary sites, Betflix is not the sole unlawful entity aiming to exploit the Thai market for illicit gains, representing a growing troublesome trend.
Throughout the series of raids conducted in Thailand, the investigative team issued a total of 23 arrest warrants. Among the offenders apprehended were eight police officers, as confirmed by law enforcement. Nevertheless, General Surachate was not one of those apprehended.
In May, the Thai police force conducted sweeps across several sites reportedly involved in illegal activities, apprehending and bringing to justice a total of 15 individuals.
Meanwhile, Thailand is actively deliberating the potential introduction of integrated resorts. Recent projections suggest that the first such establishments may be inaugurated by 2030. Numerous international gambling powerhouses, including MGM Resorts International, Galaxy Entertainment, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, Genting, Wynn Resorts and Las Vegas Sands, are reportedly exploring potential ventures within the region.
