A law enforcement officer in Spain has been penalized for illicitly acquiring money for gambling purposes. The individual has been handed a five-month deferred prison term along with a ten-month disqualification period.
The officer’s wrongdoing unfolded in 2020 amid a clampdown on an unauthorized drug business. At the location of the bust, the policeman and his coworkers confiscated bags of marijuana and nearly $10,000 in money.
Rather than securing the discovered funds, the officer chose to misappropriate them unnoticed by his peers. Subsequently, eight hours later, he indulged himself at a nearby casino using the embezzled money. Tragically, a series of gambling losses ensued, with the officer parting with all the money he had hoped to increase.
When asked by the law enforcement authorities to surrender the confiscated items, he returned only the drugs. This erratic behavior raised eyebrows amongst his colleagues, prompting them to report the case. This led to a full-blown investigation into the incident, eventually exposing the officer’s transgression.
Fortunately for the man, his ability to refund the money acted as a significant attenuating circumstance, resulting in a less severe punishment. Consequently, he only received a suspended sentence. However, there are possibilities for the prosecution to challenge the verdict.
