Regrettably, some convicts don’t see their sentences as a cause for concern. Deobra Delone Redden, aged 30, most certainly dismissed that notion, choosing instead to attack the judge who refused to grant him bail.
Redden was awaiting his sentence from a previous crime, in which he had attempted to assault another individual using a baseball bat. In November, he had entered a guilty plea for inflicting serious injuries during this incident.
During his recent sentencing hearing in Las Vegas, Redden expressed his belief that his crime was not serious enough to justify a prison sentence. He did, however, concede that the judge possessed ultimate power in deciding his fate.
Yet he swiftly contradicted his own words, when Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus issued a prison sentence with no option for probation, initiating a violent reaction from Redden. With the outcry, “Oh, to hell with that woman,” he almost immediately launched himself at the judge, across her desk.
Judge Holthus tried to avoid the assault but was not quick enough, resulting in her being overpowered by the aggressive assailant. Redden punched her several times while she was on the floor. Other individuals present in the courtroom, such as a marshal and a law clerk, attempted to assist Judge Holthus during the attack. Sadly, the marshal ended up with a forehead injury and a dislocated shoulder, necessitating hospital treatment.
Although Judge Holthus also suffered from the attack, her injuries were not as severe and did not demand immediate medical attention.
The Culprit Will Face Repercussions, Legal Experts Issue Warning
The incident was later taken up by the Las Vegas District Court. Court representatives extended their praise towards those who rushed to aid Judge Holthus and aided in restraining the defendant. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson expressed his condemnation of Redden’s violent conduct, assuring there would indeed be legal repercussions.
As for those consequences, following the incident, Redden was detained and transferred to the Clark County Detention Center. He now faces two new charges from his recent attacks. Local media outlets report that he is being charged with both battery and battery of a protected person.
Interestingly, the alleged baseball bat assault and the recent attack on Judge Holthus necessitating this sentencing, are not Redden’s first incidences of violence. He previously served time in Nevada, following a conviction of domestic battery.
